Prices of almost all types of vegetables and chickens have gone up during this week. The prices of broiler chicken have increased by Tk. 15 to Tk 20 per kg in a week. The prices of all types of vegetables have also increased by Tk 10 to Tk 15 per kg. However, the prices of fish, meat and eggs remain unchanged.
The information was obtained by visiting several markets in the capital on Friday (May 15).
The price of per kg bitter gourd is being sold at Tk 35 to Tk 40, papaya Tk 20 to Tk 30, pointed gourd Tk 45- Tk 50, taro shoots 60 to 65, big aurum Tk 40 to Tk 50, snake gourd Tk 40 to Tk 50, brinjal Tk 60 to Tk 70. Besides, a pumpkin is being sold at Tk 40 to Tk 50, cabbage is being sold at Tk 30 to Tk 35 Tk. per piece and green bananas are being sold at 5 to 6 Tk per piece.
Cucumbers are being sold at Tk 30 to Tk 35 per kg, besides, tomatoes are being sold at Tk 35 to Tk 40, and carrots are being sold at Tk 30 to 40, per kg coriander leaves are being sold at Tk 60 to Tk 70, mint leaves are being sold at Tk 100 per kg. A dozen small lemons are being sold at Tk 30 to Tk 35 and large size lemons at Tk 40 to Tk 45.
Akbar Ali, a vegetable seller Katashur Market, said the supply of vegetables in the wholesale market is low now, so the prices are higher. Prices have risen due to high demand and prices will go down in the wholesale, the retail prices will also come down.
Although the prices of chicken have rose a bit during the week, the prices of beef and mutton have remained the same. Broilers are being sold at Tk 140 to Tk 150/kg, white layers at Tk 180 to Tk 190/kg, golden chicken at Tk 270 to Tk 280/kg while non-farm chicken is being sold at Tk 500 to Tk 550 per kg.
Beef is being sold at Tk 600, buffalo meat at Tk 600 and mutton at Tk 800- Tk 850 per kg.
Md. Faisal, a chicken vendor at Mohammadpur Town Hall Market, told The Business Post that the price of chicken came down due to the coronavirus. Many farms have not produced baby chicken. As a result, the supply of chicken in the market has decreased. Again, the demand has increased in the last few days, stoking the prices a bit.
However, the price of spices has come down a bit. Garlic of local variety is being sold in the market at Tk 100 to Tk 120 while Chinese variety sold at Tk. 130 to 140 per kg. Local onions are being sold at Tk. 45 to Tk 50 per kg.
Ginger vendors charge Tk. 140 to Tk 150 for one kg. Soybean (red) is being retailed at Tk 105 per liter when open white soybean is being sold at Tk 100 per liter. Mustard oil remains unchanged. Open mustard oil is being sold at Tk. 200 per liter.
The price of rice has come down by Tk 5 to Tk 6 per kg. At present, per kg of Miniket (new) rice is being sold at Tk. 57 to 58, old Miniket at Tk 60 to Tk 62 per kg, when atap rice is being sold at Tk. 42 to Tk 44 and Pilao rice is being sold at Tk. 100 to 105 per kg.
Red eggs are being sold at Tk 85 per dozen, local chicken eggs at Tk 140 and duck eggs at Tk 110 to 120 per dozen. The prices of almost all types of fish also have remained unchanged during the week.
At that time, a buyer named Mithu Hasan told The Business Post that traders syndicate to raise prices whenever they get an excuse. This is nothing new. They have increased the prices of everything by seeing more buyers in the market today. If the market had been strictly monitored by the government, all these manipulators would have been punished.
