Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan has resigned, law adviser of the newly installed interim government Professor Asif Nazrul said on Saturday.

"Our Chief Justice resigned a few minutes ago. His resignation letter has already reached the law ministry. We will send it to the President without delay for taking necessary measures," the law, justice and parliamentary affairs adviser said in a video message on his Facebook post, reports BSS.

Earlier in the morning Hasan told BSS that “in principle” he had decided to step down and would submit his resignation letter to the President after completing some formalities.

Lawyers including hundreds of protestors of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement have taken position at the SC premises since morning demanding the resignation of the judges of the Appellate Division including the chief justice.

5 Appellate Division judges resigning

After Obaidul Hasan resigned from his position as the chief justice on Saturday, five more judges of the Appellate Division decided to resign as well. Sources say they will submit their resignation letters to the president within the day.

These five judges are – Justice Borhanuddin, Justice M Enayetur Rahim, Justice Md Abu Zafor Siddiqui, Justice Jahangir Hossain, and Justice Kashefa Hussain.
