Bangladesh will receive five lakh doses of Covid-19 vaccine from China by May 10, said Health Minister Zahid Maleque on Monday.
He disclosed the matter while talking to reporters at the secretariat, adding that the doses would arrive by sea.
“China confirmed that they’ll ship us five lakh shots of Covid-19 vaccine as a gift. The consignment is expected to arrive by May 10,” the minister said.
“However, it’ll take a little more time for the doses we’re willing to purchase from them to arrive,” he said.
Zahid said the Bangladesh government has already sent a proposal to procure more vaccine shots. The discussion regarding the purchase will begin as soon as the Chinese government responds with their own version of the proposal.
“We need a lot more vaccine and plan to buy at least four to five crore doses from China,” he further added.
Bangladesh on April 27 approved the Russian Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine for emergency use in the country.
