A Dhaka court on Monday placed national award-winning dancer-choreographer Ivan Shahriar Sohag on a seven-day remand in a case filed over his alleged involvement in trafficking women to Dubai.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahmuda Begum passed the order after a hearing in this regard.
Earlier on September 15, the investigation officer of the case prayed for a seven-day remand for interrogation of Ivan Shahriar Sohag. Later, the court fixed September 21 for hearing on remand in presence of the accused.
Earlier on September 11, a team of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police arrested Ivan Shahriar Sohag for his alleged involvement in trafficking women to Dubai.
CID officials said that based on information from Dubai Police, the ringleader of a female trafficking ring, Azam Khan and four of his associates were arrested last month.
Several dance organisers, dancers and owners of dance clubs are involved in this ring who targeted mainly the members of small dance clubs or troupes who perform at various social events, police said citing deposition of Azam and his aides.
Ivan Shahriar Sohag was shown arrested in a case filed on July 2 by Mrinal Kanti Das, assistant superintendent of police at CID, against Azam Khan and his four associates under the Human Trafficking Act.
Sohag has a dance troupe named ‘Sohag Dance Troupe’. He won the 42nd National Film Awards under choreography category for Dhallywood film ‘Dhat Teri Ki’.
