City bus owners again refuse fare concession proposal

Leaders of bus owners on Saturday again refused to take half fares from the students at a meeting held between Bangladesh Road Transport Authorities (BRTA) and Transport Owners Association.

BRTA arranged the two-hour meeting with representatives of the transport owner, worker, police for a logical solution at the BRTA Banani office following the student protest demanding for 50 per cent discount on bus fares.

BRTA Chairman Nur Mohammad Mazumder told the media that there will be more discussions on the topic of half fares for the students as the meeting ended without any conclusive decisions.

However, BRTA, and transport stakeholders showed interest to look into the matter and they have wanted to know the total number of educational institutions and students' separate identity cards in Dhaka city, Nur Mohammad Mazumder said.

Besides, Khandaker Enayet Ullah, the general secretary of Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association said, the reason behind proposing a subsidy before deciding on the issue of discounted fares is 80 per cent of bus owners’ family depends on their transports (buses) for their incomes.

Meanwhile, students were protesting onto the streets once again demanding half fare on the bus and road safety following the death of Notre Dame College student Nayeem Hasan, who was killed at capital Gulistan on Wednesday when a garbage truck of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) hit him.

Protesters from several colleges blocked the Asad Gate and Dhanmondi 27 around 12:00pm on Saturday. Another group of students protested at the Uttara House Building area around 11:00am.
