A lighter vessel carrying 800 tonnes of cement clinkers sank in the Pashur River at Kainmari in Mongla upazila of Bagerhat district on Sunday night.

The vessel named ‘MV Anmona-2’ with 10 crew members sank at Kainmari point while heading towards Seven Rings Cement Factory along the Rupsha River in Khulna around 8:30 pm.

All the crew members managed to swim ashore.

Mainul Islam Mintu, vice president of the Lighterage Ship Workers Union, said the vessel sank as the anchor tore due to a strong current in the river.

A rescue vessel was sent to the spot to salvage the sunken vessel.
