A CNG-run autorickshaw caught on fire when miscreants hurled a crude bomb in Old Dhaka Sunday morning as the 48-hour countrywide hartal called by the BNP, Jamaat and like-minded opposition parties, is underway.

The cocktail attack happened in front of the ‘One Star Hotel’ on Kazi Alauddin Road in Old Dhaka around 8:30am today, confirmed Talha Bin Zashim, station officer of the Fire Service and Civil Defence (media cell).

Responding to the call, firefighters from Siddique Bazar Fire Station rushed to the spot to douse the fire, he said.

After the fifth spell of countrywide blockade ended on Friday morning, BNP, Jamaat, and like-minded opposition parties called the 48-hour hartal after rejecting the polls schedule announced on November 15.

The shutdown, which began at 6am Sunday, will end at 6am on Tuesday and is meant to mount pressure on the government to step down, hand over power to a neutral government, and release all the arrested BNP leaders and activists, including its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
