Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) has rescued 13 crew of a lighter vessel after it sank partially in the Bay of Bengal on Saturday night.
Media officer of the BCG Headquarters Lt Commander Khandaker Munif Taqi on Sunday said a lighter vessel named MV "Humaira" left Chattogram at around 10:00am on Saturday night for Dhaka with 750 tons of coal amid local warning signal No 3.
At one point, the hatch cover of the lighter vessel was damaged due to bad weather and water started entering into the vessel and the engine broke down.
Later the damaged lighter vessel anchored approximately 10.5 nautical miles south-east of Bhasanchar Light House and the crew requested assistance from the administration through mobile phone.
Being informed, a rescue operation was immediately conducted in the rough sea led by command of Lt Commander Abdullah Al Mamun, the captain of the Coast Guard's regular patrol vessel "BCGS Sabuj Bangla" and the crew were rescued.
Finally, the rescued crew members were brought to Chattragram coast and then the BCG members handed them over to the owner of the lighter vessel, the media officer added.
