Complaints against cops: Legal notice seeks formation of independent probe commission

A legal notice has been served to the government by 53 Supreme Court lawyers collectively, asking it to form an independent investigation commission titled 'Police Complaint Investigation Commission' to look into allegations against members of the police.

Supreme court lawyer Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir served the legal notice on behalf of the 53 Supreme Court lawyers on Thursday.

The notice was served to the Senior Secretary of the Public Security Division, secretaries of the legislative and parliamentary affairs division and Law & Justice Division and Inspector General of Police (IGP).

According to the legal notice, 18 types of offences were reportedly conducted by police from 2017 to 2020. The 908-page legal notice annexed 500 incidents.

These offences include -- crossfire, custodial death, torture in custody, disappearance, kidnapping, rape, eve-teasing, women repression, extortion, drug peddling, negligence to record FIR and investigation, bribery and torturing journalists.

The legal notice said if the respondents fail to take necessary steps to form a commission within four weeks, a writ petition will be filed with the High Court in this regard.
