The High Court has exempted Nobel laureate economist Dr Muhammad Yunus and two others from physical appearance in the court in connection with a contempt of court rule.
The HC bench comprising Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Kamrul Hossain Mollah passed the order on Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, Dr Muhammad Yunus appeared before the HC bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah today (Tuesday) in compliance with its February 18, 2021, summons order.
Later, the HC bench fixed April 22 for passing an order on the issue.
Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud and Barrister Mustafizur Rahman Khan were present in favour of Dr Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Telecom while Deputy Attorney General Nowroz Md Russell Chowdhury represented the state.
On the other hand, Advocate Yusuf Ali moved for the petitioner today before the court.
Earlier on February 18, a virtual HC bench summoned Dr Muhammad Yunus in contempt and ordered him to appear before it to give an explanation for failing to comply with a previous order. Besides, the court also asked him to appear before the court on March 16 virtually and explain the contempt of court.
On the same day, the HC bench also issued a rule asking why action will not be taken against Dr Muhammad Yunus for not complying with the court order.
Dr Muhammad Yunus was earlier accused of sacking 100 workers without having any discussion with the organisation’s Collective Bargaining Agent (CBA) leaders.
Moreover, they were terminated reportedly through a single notice signed by Grameen Telecom Managing Director Md Ashraful Hasan.
Later, this decision was challenged at the HC, which ordered the reappointment of the workers.
Grameen Telecom CBA leader Kamruzzaman filed the petition on the charge of contempt against Dr Muhammad Yunus as he had not complied with the court order.
