The government has extended the ongoing nationwide lockdown until June 16 midnight to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Hotels and food outlets will be allowed to operate at half their capacity between 6:00am to 10:00pm, the Cabinet Division said in a circular on Sunday.

Public transports will have to leave 50 per cent of their seats empty.

The government imposed a nationwide lockdown on April 5 as coronavirus cases shot up since mid-March. From April 14, the government went for “strict lockdown”. It was extended in phases until June 6.

On April 23, the Cabinet Division issued a notice allowing shops and shopping malls to operate from April 25 between 10:00am 5:00pm on condition of properly maintaining safety protocols.

Bangladesh on Sunday recorded 38 new Covid-19 deaths, pushing the local tally to 12,839.

The country reported its first coronavirus cases on March 8 last year and the first death on March 18, 2020.

Coronavirus cases were first reported in China in December 2019. The virus went on to affect the entire world, putting the global economy into the worst recession since the Great Depression, according to IMF.
