4,008 more people tested positive for the coronavirus in Bangladesh over the last 24 hours as of Wednesday, which is the highest single-day record of new infections in the country, making 98,489 confirmed cases in total.

Besides, 43 patients died from Covid-19, taking the death toll to 1,305.

Additional Director General (Admin) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr Nasima Sultana revealed the information at a regular online briefing on Wednesday afternoon. 

Dr Nasima mentioned that a total of 18,922 samples were collected and 17,527 tested in the last 24 hours. So far, a total of 551,244 samples have been tested in the country.

With 1,925 new recoveries, a total of 38,189 patients recovered from coronavirus to date.

The deceased, of whom 28 were males and 15 females, belonged to the following age groups: one was between 01-10 years, one between 11-20 years, one between 21-30, four between 31-40, four were between 41-50, nine between 51-60 years, 12 between 61-70, nine between 71-80 and two were between 81-90 years.

Under division-wise categorisation, 21 hailed from the Dhaka division, 12 from Chattogram, four from Rajshahi, two each from Khulna and Mymensingh and one each from Sylhet and Rangpur divisions.

27 breathed their last while undergoing treatment at various hospitals while 15 died at home. The remaining one was already dead when brought to the hospital.

Meanwhile, global deaths from the novel coronavirus infection reached 441,439 as of Wednesday morning, according to the data by the Johns Hopkins University.

So far, 8,153,241 cases have been confirmed around the world after Covid-19, the disease caused by the new strain of coronavirus, was first reported in China in December last year.

Although cases of new infection keep growing among the infected world population currently, most of them are in mild condition.

Among the currently 3,504,340 infected patients, 3,449,746 are in mild condition, which is 98 per cent, Worldometer records in its daily updates. On the other hand, 54,594 of the currently infected patients are in serious condition, and their percentage is only two.

So far, 3,945,448 people have recovered.
