A Chattogram court sent to jail BNP leader Gulzar Begum, the wife of a CID officer, in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sheikh Ashfaqur Rahman passed the order after rejecting her bail petition.
Gulzar, the organising secretary of ward 4 of Chattogram Metropolitan City unit, surrendered before a court and sought bail.
Mahmudul Haque, a counsel of ACC, said Gulzar, wife of CID Sub-Inspector Nawab Ali, filed a bail petition which was rejected by the court.
In 1992, Nawab Ali joined as a constable and earned Tk 1.1 lakh from fish farming. In a wealth statement submitted to the ACC, he showed his wife Gulzar as the owner of the property. But the ACC did not find any evidence of fish farming, said the lawyer.
On February 25, a court ordered arrest of four people, including Gulzar and her husband, in the corruption case.
Two other accused of the case are additional assistant tax commissioner of Chattogram-1 Bahar Uddin Chowdhury, and tax Inspector Dipankor Ghosh.
The court fixed April 6 for the next hearing.
During investigation, ACC found evidence that Nawab Ali, hailing from Kekania in sadar upazila of Gopalganj, built a two-storey building on a 6.9 decimals plot in his name and 354 decimals of land was purchased under his wife's name in Salimpur in Sitakunda upazila.
Besides, the couple also owns a car parking area of about 1,100 square foot and a four decimals of land and a multi-storey building worth Tk 20 crore.
