Corruption in Bangladesh can be curbed if the people take into heart the sacrifices made by martyrs of 1971 Liberation War, instead of only speaking about them, said Unique Group Managing Director and freedom fighter Mohd Noor Ali on Friday.

“We have heard the words of Bangabandhu. We discuss these words every year, but how much do we remember his ideals? Even today, we carry the pain of the martyrs of '71,” he said while speaking at a discussion marking the 52nd Victory Day, held by the Gulshan Joggers' Society.

Mohd Noor Ali, also the chief advisor of the Gulshan Joggers' Society, continued, “I believe that in Bangladesh, and even before the creation of Bangladesh, there was only one leader, he is Bangabandhu, the father of the nation.”

Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun was the chief guest at the discussion, and the event was chaired by Gulshan Joggers’ Society President Jahangir Alam. Eminent media personality Shykh Seraj was present as a special guest.

Gulshan Joggers Society General Secretary Md Abdullah delivered the welcome speech at the meeting. Vice-President MA Kamal, Professor Dr Anwar Hossain, and Hosne Ara Ahsan also spoke at the event.

Reminiscing about the architect of Bangladesh’s independence Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Mohd Noor Ali said, “He (Bangabandhu) has given a country to the Bengali people. He made history. He became the best Bengali of a thousand years.

“He is the leader. He has given us four pillars – democracy, socialism, nationalism, and secularism. Show me another person out of 17 crore who spoke about these? Who talked about freedom? Who prepared people step by step for freedom? Only Bangabandhu.”

In his speech as the event’s chief guest, Industry Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun said, “Of course, you can criticise the government. You can even criticise the prime minister. But even if you criticise, you should have a sense of decency.

“Nowadays, no one wants to respect politicians. Politicians are also part of society. Every politician has a position in society. Criticism should be done with that in mind.”

The industries minister continued, “Bangabandhu said that no one could keep us oppressed. There is still conspiracy, as there was back then during the Liberation War. Many told us to compromise, but we did not.”

Gulshan Joggers Society celebrated the 52nd Victory Day at the Joggers premises. On the occasion, photography based on the Liberation War was exhibited.

After the discussion, the guests enjoyed a cultural program. At the beginning of the programme, the national flag and the Joggers Society flag were hoisted.
