The Anti-Corruption Commission on Sunday approved a case against Chandpur’s Laxmipur union parishad Chairman Selim Khan over amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 34.53 crore and concealing information about his wealth.

An inquiry team led by ACC’s Assistant Director Ataur Rahman Prodhan found that Selim Khan amassed wealth worth Tk 34.53 crore beyond known sources of income, ACC Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain said while talking to journalists at the commission’s headquarters in Dhaka.

Analysing Selim Khan and his wife’s wealth statements which were submitted to the commission, the anti-graft body also found that he concealed information of Tk 66.99 lakh of wealth, he said

The ACC official also said the commission approved the case at its regular meeting against Selim Khan, also proprietor and director of Shapla Media, and the commission will file a case against him very soon.

On April 26, a Dhaka court imposed a travel ban on Selim Khan following an ACC petition as the commission’s primary inquiry found that he accumulated illegal wealth.

Earlier, the ACC initiated an inquiry against Selim over his alleged involvement in an attempt to embezzle Tk 359 crore from the government in the process of land acquisition for the establishment of Chandpur Science and Technology University.

Selim Khan, a former president of the ruling Awami League union unit who was suspended later, is also involved in illegal dredging in the Meghna River and selling sand, the ACC official said.

There are allegations that a group of influential individuals bought nearly 62.5 acres of land chosen for the proposed university at a price 20 times higher than the actual price.

It was alleged that Selim Khan was involved in the land acquisition process and was set to pocket Tk 359 crore from the government exchequer.

Selim Khan also allegedly caused the government to lose thousands of crores of taka through his illegal dredging in the Meghna River and selling sand.
