Country's onion output up by 10 lakh tonnes: Minister

Treasury bench lawmaker and Agriculture Minister Abdus Shahid on Wednesday said the country's onion production has been increased by 10 lakh tonnes as the government is implementing the action plan for achieving self-sufficiency in onion production.

"The country's onion production has already been raised by 10 lakh tonnes and attention has been given to the rise of summer onion,” he said while taking part in the general discussion on a Thanksgiving motion on the president's speech in the House, reports BSS.

Taking part in the discussion, a senior ruling party lawmaker said, "Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, brought agricultural revolution in the country by giving topmost importance to food production."

Now the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is giving topmost importance on agricultural production in line with the philosophy of Bangabandhu. Now the country's overall food production has reached over 4.66 crore tonnes while it was around 3.28 crore tonnes in 2008-09 fiscal.

The lawmaker, however, said the president in his 143-page speech highlighted the country's good governance, development of skilled youth forces, local government, development of small indigenous people and the defence of the country.

The present government led by the Awami League is working to build the country as Sonar Bangla dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, said the lawmakers separately in their address.

While projecting the current development activities, the ruling party lawmaker said Bangladesh has secured the 34th position among the growing economy of the Asian pacific region under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Ruling party lawmakers - MA Mannan of Sunamganj-3, Shahjahan Khan of Madaripur-2, Towhiduzzaman of Jashore-2, Golam Faruque of Lakshmipur-3, Dewan Zahid Ahmed of Manikganj-2, Motahar Hossen of Lalmonirhat-1, Abdur Rashid of Jamalpur-4, Iftekhar Uddin Talukder Pinto of Netrokona-3, Zillur Rahman of Moulvibazar-3, SM Ataul Huq of Satkhira-4, independent lawmakers - Amatul Kibria Keya Chowdhury of Habiganj-1, Sohrab Uddin of Kishoreganj-2, Abu Zaher of Cumilla-5, among others, spoke on the occasion.

The lawmakers highlighted the successes of the present government in different vital sectors, including education, power, agriculture, health, infrastructure development, economy and food production sectors.

Earlier, they paid rich tribute to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for his leading role in establishing an independent Bangladesh.
