A couple was found dead in separate places of their four-storey building in the Jatrabari area of Dhaka city in the early hours of Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Shafiqur Rahman, 60, and his wife Farida Yasmin, 50. Shafiqur worked at Janata Bank.

Police said the couple lived on the second floor of the building. They suspect the couple has been murdered as a preliminary investigation found cut marks on their bodies.

Jatrabari Police Station’s Sub-Inspector (SI) Romjan Ali said that they received a call from the National Emergency Service 999 around 6:30am. Later, they recovered Shafiqur’s body from the building’s parking area and Farida’s body from their flat on the second floor.

Jatrabari police Inspector (operation) Md Tawhidul Haque Mamun said that both bodies bore injury marks. The bodies were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsies.

“We suspect miscreants hacked them to death anytime at night. We are investigating,” he said.

Abul Hasan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jatrabari Police Station, said that the reason behind the possible murders was yet to be known. “It will be known after investigation whether it is the outcome of an old dispute or a robbery,” he added.

Initially, police suspected that Shafiqur was returning after the Fazr prayers in the morning when he came under attack. Later, the miscreants killed his wife on the second floor, he said.

The OC also said that the building’s main gate and the door of the couple’s flat were found open. The almirah was also found open.

The building’s third and fourth floors and one side of the ground floor were rented out.

The couple’s son Emon, a SI of the Special Branch of the police, and his wife also live in the same house. However, they were not at home on Wednesday night.
