Court slaps ad-interim injunction on facebook.com.bd

A Dhaka Court today issued an ad-interim injunction against facebook.com.bd in connection with a case filed by Facebook authorities seeking compensation of around $50,000.

The court also issued notice against the defendants to give reasons as to why the temporary injunction should not be imposed on the website.

District and Session Judge of Dhaka Mohammad Shawkat Ali Chowdhury passed the order on Monday (December 14).

Barrister Moksadul Islam, who was appointed by Facebook authorities to contest the lawsuit, confirmed the matter to the Business Post.

Earlier on December 1, a Dhaka court fixed December 14 for the next date of hearing against facebook.com.bd in a case filed by Facebook authorities seeking compensation of around $50,000.

On November 22, social media giant Facebook authority filed a lawsuit in the lower court of Bangladesh against facebook.com.bd seeking compensation of the aforesaid amount for operating a website bearing its name.

Facebook authorities claimed that they had sent multiple legal notices to facebook.com.bd asking it to shut down their website but the website remained operative.

Later, Barrister Moksadul Islam informed that the Facebook authorities already provided him with relevant documents and they would move to the court to seek a ban on the operation of the website.

A1 Software Limited, a Bangladeshi company, opened a new domain using the same name as Facebook. Now, they want to sell this domain for $6 million.
