Court wants probe report on Shahed’s NRB Bank loan by Aug 16

A Dhaka court has asked the investigating officer (IO) to submit by August 16 the probe report in a case filed against Regent Group boss Shahed Karim alias Md Shahed, and three others, on allegations of embezzling Tk1.51 crore from NRB Bank.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Kayes fixed the date on Thursday (July 23).

Earlier on July 22, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Assistant Director Sirajul Haque filed the case with its Integrated District Office 1 in Dhaka.

The other three accused in the case are Regent Hospital Ltd Managing Director Ibrahim Khalil, former principal officer of SME Banking at NRB Bank Sohanur Rahman, and Vice President of SME Banking at NRB Bank Wahid Bin Ahmed.

On July 13, ACC decided to probe the allegations against Regent Hospital owner Shahed and formed a four-member probe committee to that end.

In 2014, a Tk2 crore loan was cleared by NRB Bank without any collateral.

According to the case statement, three FDRs were created with Tk1 crore. The remaining Tk1 crore remained unpaid, and Shahed now owes Tk1.51 crore including interest.

On July 21, a Dhaka court issued a warrant to arrest Shahed, who is currently behind bars in a case over forgery and another one over money embezzlement. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Habibur Rahman passed the order, taking into cognisance a case filed against the fraud kingpin for embezzling Tk 20 lakh.

On the same day, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) decided to file a case against Shahed on allegation of embezzling Tk1.51 crore from NRB bank

A Dhaka court on 16 July placed Shahed and managing director Masud Parvez on 10-day remand each in connection with cases filed over providing fake Covid-19 test reports and embezzlement of Tk 3.68 crore. Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jasim passed the order.

On July 15, Shahed was arrested with illegal arms in a special drive from the bank of Labangaboti river in Komarpur village around 5:00 am. Later, he was flown to Dhaka by helicopter.
