A Dhaka court on Thursday placed two “prime accused” – Manik Rajib and Al Amin – on three-day remand each in the case filed over the attack on Ashraful Alam alias Hero Alam, an independent candidate in the Dhaka-17 by-polls.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Tahmina Haque passed the order as the police produced the duo before the court and pleaded to place them on seven-day remand each.

The police arrested Manik and Al Amin in the city’s Tejgoan area Wednesday night. The police said they were the main attackers on Hero Alam.

Banani police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mostafizur Rahman said CCTV camera footage shows Manik was holding Hero Alam's waist during the attack while Al Amin was beating up him.

A total of nine people have been arrested in connection with the attack so far.

Earlier, the police arrested seven people in connection with the assault. They are Sanowar Kazi, 28, Biplob Hossain, 31, Mahmudul Hasan, 27, Mozahid Khan, 27, Ashik Sarkar, 24, Ridhoy Sheikh, 24, and Sohel Mollah, 25.

Of them, Sanowar and Biplob were placed on three-day remand each on Tuesday.
