A Dhaka court on Monday exempted six Islamic orators – including Mufti Md Amir Hamza, Mufti Ali Hasan Oasama and Mufti Harun Izhar – from a case filed under Anti-Terrorism Act with the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station back on May 5 in 2021.

The three others are – Mahmudul Hasan Gunbi, Al Sakid Mohmmad Abdullah, and Anwar Hossain.

Judge Md Mujibur Rahman of the Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal acquitted the six persons who were on bail from the charges in their presence, and ordered to initiate the trial against detained Abu Sakib after framing charges against him upon hearing from both the sides.

The prosecution appealed for framing charges against the accused while the defence lawyer pleaded for exemption from the charges in the case filed by the police.

According to the case details, a team of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CCTC) detained Sakib in connection with a plan to attack on the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in the capital with a sword.

Sakib later gave a confessional statement under section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) before a court.

In which Sakib said he was instigated in doing so by the fanatic posts in the social network sites that include Facebook by the six persons, including the three Islamic orators who were relieved from the charges today.

The CTTC Inspector and Investigation Officer of the case Kazi Mizanur Rahman placed the charge sheet before the court on September 21 in 2023.
