Among the 17 people arrested for alleged involvement with Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) exam question paper leaks, six accused – including PSC chairman’s former driver Syed Abed Ali – have given confessional statements.

The other five are – dispatch rider Khalilur Rahman, Office Assistant Sajedul Islam, Sakhawat Hossain, Sayem Hossain, and Liton Sarkar. Their confessional statements were taken under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Meanwhile, BPSC deputy directors Abu Jafar and Md Jahangir Alam, Assistant Director Alamgir Kabir, dispatch rider Khalilur Rahman, Office Assistant Sajedul Islam have been suspended from their positions at the commission.

An office order signed by PSC chairman discloses the matter, adding that the five will receive due allowances during their suspension.

On Tuesday, the 17 accused over BPSC question paper leak were produced in a Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court at 1:40pm.

The police’s Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) Additional Special Superintendent of Police (Cyber Investigation and Operations) Jewel Chakma applied to record six statements, stating that they have “admitted to plead guilty.”

He also requested the court to send the other ten accused to jail.

The lawyers had applied for the bail of these ten accused. But, the state opposed the bail. After the hearing of both sides, the court denied the bail of ten accused and ordered to send them to jail.

The jailed accused are, Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam – the son of Syed Abed Ali, BPSC deputy directors Abu Jafar and Md Jahangir Alam, Assistant Director Alamgir Kabir, Auditor Priyanath Roy, businessman Zahidul Islam, Narayanganj Passport Office Security Guard Shahadat Hossain, working in Dhaka's Immigration and Passport Office Mamunur Rashid, Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital Medical Technician Niamun Hasan, Noman Siddiqui, and Abu Solaiman Md Sohel.

Court and CID sources say those who agreed to confess, were taken to a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Office for recording their respective statements. Then they too were sent to jail.

On Sunday night, Syed Abed Ali's posts on Facebook started going viral after an investigative report against BPSC was published on a private television channel.

After that the CID conducted raids in different areas across the country throughout Sunday and arrested 17 people for their alleged involvement in the BPSC question paper leak.

Later, the CID filed a case against them under the PSC Act at Paltan Model Police Station on Monday night. Meanwhile, the BPSC has formed a three-member investigation committee to thoroughly investigate the issue.
