The Anti Corruption Commission of Bangladesh (ACC) withdrew the case filed against Anis Ahmed, Group Managing Director of MGH Group.

Judge Mohammad Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court issued the order after the ACC submitted an application seeking withdrawal of prosecution of the case under Section 494 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The Honourable Judge also relieved Anis Ahmed from the charges of the case.

Earlier in the day, the anti-graft watchdog approved the withdrawal of the prosecution in the case after scrutinising an application submitted by the investigating officer and other case records.

According to a news report published on Prothom Alo on September 7th (https://www.prothomalo.com/bangladesh/j6aeef4m8t), it was the former Business Advisor of the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Salman F Rahman, vice chairman of Beximco Group influenced the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) to file cases against Anis Ahmed to harass Anis as part of business rivalry.

Anis Ahmed has been a regular taxpayer and claims to be one of the major taxpayers within his tax circle. During the year 2021, he paid his taxes according to the tax brackets offered under a tax amnesty scheme which was fully accepted by the Tax Authorities.

Under the statute of the tax amnesty scheme, no government agency can question the taxpayer, however, the ACC took upon themselves breaching Parliament-passed laws under the instructions of Former Prime Minister’s Business Advisor, Salman F Rahman.

The ACC filed the case against Anis on December 28, 2022, with its integrated district office in Dhaka-1 on charges of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 136 crores.

Earlier in February 2020, the ACC interrogated Anis Ahmed at the commission.
