A team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Md Abdul Wahed Mondol, a Razakar (collaborator) from Gaibandha, convicted and sentenced to death in absentia, from the Manda precinct of Dhaka.

"Acting on tip-off, an operation team of RAB-3 arrested Wahed, 70, from his son's home in North Manda area under Mugda Police Station around 6pm on Thursday," RAB-3 commanding officer Lt Col Arif Mohiuddin told newsmen at a press briefing held at RAB Media Center in the capital's Kawranbazar on Thursday.

Md Abdul Wahed Mondol was tried in absentia for his crimes against humanity in 1971 and was convicted and sentenced to death along with four other perpetrators including his father Md Abdul Jabbar Mondol and brother Md Jachhijar Rahman, by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 on October 15, 2019.

Wahed was an active member of Jamaat-e-Islami and joined the collaborators in Gaibandha under the command of his father Abdul Jabbar Mondol, tribunal judgment pronounced.

RAB sources said Wahed, his father and his brother went into hiding as the trial procedure against them started in 2016. He used to change his location regularly to evade the law-enforcement agencies.

RAB handed Md Abdul Wahed Mondol over to Shahbagh Police Station for further proceedings.
