A Dhaka court has dismissed the case filed by BNP leader Tabith Awal against 16 people, including Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Banani police station Noor-e-Azam.

Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge Court Judge Md Asaduzzaman dismissed the case on Tuesday as there was no evidence to accept it, court sources told the Business Post.

On Monday, Tabith Awal filed the case against the accused under section 15 (1)(3) of the Torture and Custodial Death (Prohibition) Act, 2013.

Apart from the OC, the other accused in the case are - Dhaka Metropolitan North Awami League Vice-President Kader Khan, Banani Thana Awami League former vice-president Jasim Uddin, former general secretary Mir Mosharraf Hossain, Swachhasebak League Joint General Secretary Amjad Hossain, Awami League Vice President and Ward No 19 Councilor Mofizur Rahman, Ward No 2 Councilor Nasir, Sramik League’s Babu, Jubo League’s Shyamal, Dolan, Roni, Bobby, Sagar, Mamun, Maruf, and Shafiq.

According to the complaint, BNP held a candlelight vigil from Kakali in Banani to Gulshan 2 intersection on September 17 in protest against the unbridled hike in the prices of all the commodities including electricity, gas, and essential oil, and the killing of three-party leaders by the police.

During that program, 200 to 300 vigilantes, led by the accused in the case, marched toward the activists with weapons.

At that time, Tabith Awal requested the OC of Banani police station to provide security but they did not take any action. Later, when the program was over, the vigilantes attacked the activists.
