The Appellate Division ordered the High Court to dispose of the writ petition filed against the order of the labour appellate tribunal to pay dividend to sacked 106 employees and staff of the Grameen Kalyan-owned by Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus, within two months.

The court also postponed the effectiveness of an HC order that issued status quo over the order of the labour appellate tribunal to pay dividends to the sacked employees of the organization.

A three-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order after hearing a petition in this regard.

Khurshid Alam Khan accompanied by advocate Golam Rabbani Sharif stood for the former employees of the Grameen Kalyan and Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun represented Dr Yunus.

On May 30, an HC bench led by Justice Zafar Ahmed and Justice Md ANM Bashir Ullah stayed a labour appellate tribunal order that allowed paying a five per cent dividend to 106 sacked employees and staff of the organization for six months.

The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why the appellate tribunal order won’t be declared illegal.

On April 3, the appellate tribunal ordered to pay the five per cent dividend to the sacked 106 employees and staff of the organization as per the Labour Act.

Later, the Nobel laureate submitted a petition challenging the tribunal order. The sacked staff and others used to work for the organization from 2006 to 2013.

Later, they were fired on different grounds.

The sacked employees and others first served a legal notice to the organization with an appeal to be paid the dividend but the authority didn’t pay heed to it.

Later, a case was filed with a labour court in this connection.
