A Dhaka court has rejected bail petitions of 224 BNP leaders and activists, including the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas in a case filed over clashes between police and BNP men in the Nayapaltan area on Wednesday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shafiuddin passed the order after defence lawyers moved separate petitions submitted for seeking bail in the case, BNP lawyer Masud Ahmed Talukder confirmed The Business Post on Monday.

He further said, “450 people were arrested and accused in case number 10 of Paltan police station. Among them, Amanullah Aman and Abdul Quader Bhuiyan Jewel have already been granted bail.

“So, today we applied bail before the court for 224 people including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Mirza Abbas. After the hearing, the court denied their bail applications.”

Four separate cases have been filed in Paltan, Motijheel, Ramna and Shahjahanpur police stations in connection with the clash between BNP leaders and workers in front of the BNP central office in Nayapaltan on December 7.

Fakhrul and Abbas were later arrested by the police last Friday around 3am in a case filed with the Paltan police. The court ordered to send them to jail on Friday after rejecting their bail plea.

Fakhrul and Abbas, along with 224 other people, had applied for bail on Sunday, and the court had fixed the date of hearing on Monday.
