At least six more cases have been filed against former prime minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, her party’s leaders and others over the loss of lives during the recent student-led quota reform movement and mass uprising that led to the fall of her government.
Apart from her, most of the cases — filed at police stations in Dhaka and other districts — accused many members of her cabinet, lawmakers, former top officials of police, and leaders and activists of Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League and Swechchasebak League.
Hasina and 20 people, including the ousted prime minister’s sister Sheikh Rehana, son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and daughter Saima Wazed Putul, were accused in one of the cases filed over the killing of a fruit vendor named Farid Sheikh.
Farid's father Sultan Miah on Tuesday filed the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shakil Ahammed. The court after recording the statement of the complainant asked the Police Bureau of Investigation to investigate the matter and submit a report.
According to the documents, Farid was shot by police at around 3:30pm on the road, south of Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover’s toll plaza in Dhaka’s Shonir Akhra area, on August 4. He succumbed to his injuries at Mugda Hospital on August 6.
Another case was filed on Tuesday against 84 people, including Hasina, over the killing of child Tamim Shikdar, 13, in the capital’s Rampura area on July 19.
After Tamim’s grandmother Mosammat Kahinur filed an application to the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Afnan Somi in this regard, the court asked Rampura Police Station to record the FIR after taking deposition of the complainant.
In the case, it was mentioned that police fired on a rally of students and mass people at 4:30pm on July 19. At that time, Tamim was shot as he tried to cross the road. He was taken to Farazi Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
The third murder case was filed against Hasina and 24 others for killing readymade garment worker Sohel Rana during the mass uprising in the city's Adabor area on August 5.
Sohel’s brother Mohammad Ibrahim filed an application to lodge a murder case against the 25 accused at Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sultan Shohag Uddin's court on Tuesday.
According to the case statement, Sohel was shot dead during a mass protest near Adabor Police Station on August 5.
The fourth case was filed against Hasina and 49 others over the killing of a student of Kabi Nazrul College in police firing during the quota reform movement led by students in the city's Sutrapur area on July 19.
Victim Omar Faruk’s mother Kulsuma Akhter submitted an application to Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Tarikul Islam's court on Tuesday appealing to lodge the murder case.
Accepting the plea, the court ordered Sutrapur police to record the statement of the plaintiff and register the complaint as an FIR.
Moreover, 57 identified people, including Hasina and Rehana, and 300 unidentified people were accused in another case filed in Rangpur over the killing of vegetable vendor Sajjad Hossain on July 19.
Sajjad’s wife Jitu Begum moved the additional chief judicial magistrate’s court of Rangpur on Tuesday. Judge Raju Ahamed Babu ordered Kotwali Police Station to register the case.
Sajjad was shot dead in police firing during a clash between students and police and Awami League supporters in Rangpur city on July 19, the plaintiff’s lawyer Mofazzol Hossain Bokul said citing case documents, reports our Rangpur correspondent.
The sixth case was filed against 350 people, including Hasina, for killing auto-rickshaw driver Mehdi, 25, during mass protests in Joypurhat on August 5.
Mehdi’s wife Jasmin Akhter filed a murder case at the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. Mehedi went to Joypurhat town to join the mass protest on August 5. He was shot dead on the road during the protests.
The magistrate of the court took cognisance of the case and directed the Joypurhat Police Station to register it as an FIR.
