The High Court commuted the death sentence of a man named Abdul Jalil to life imprisonment on Sunday, in a murder case filed against him for killing his wife Malati Begum in Barguna in 2003.

A High Court bench presided over by Justice Shahidul Karim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman delivered the verdict after holding a hearing on the death reference and defendant's appeal.

According to the case, housewife Malati Begum was killed over a family dispute in the Bainchotki area at Patharghata upazila in Barguna, on August 28, 2003.

The Police recovered her decomposed body from an abandoned house nearby a few days later. A murder case was filed on the same day accusing five in-laws of the victim.

On April 8, 2004, the investigating officer of the case pressed a charge sheet against seven people in the court.

At the end of the trial, Abdul Jalil was sentenced to death by the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court of Barguna on May 9, 2017. The court also acquitted six people.
