High Court on Monday directed the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to investigate the incident of taking a loan of Tk 15 crore from a private bank by mortgaging government land under the Azampur section of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Uttara.
The court directed the ACC to submit a report by June 26.
A High Court division bench comprising Justice Md Nazrul Islam and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo passed the order on Monday and issued a rule in this regard.
Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik, also the state representative of the petition, confirmed the court order to BSS.
Lawyers Anik R Haque and Md Tamjeed Hasan were in favour of the writ petition.
A report titled "Looting Taka 15 crore by showing mortgage of government highway" was published in a newspaper on April 16. Following the report, a writ petition was filed by Supreme Court lawyer Obaid Ahmed in the High Court on Sunday, seeking an inquiry into the matter.
According to the news report, a notorious fraudster named Mohammad Golam Farooq had taken a loan of Tk 15 crore from a private bank by mortgaging government land on the highway. He managed to persuade several dishonest officials of the bank to take out the loan.
After the fraudulence was detected, Farooq amended the document by changing the dag number of the previously mortgaged land and submitted it to the bank.
When the bank tried to put up a signboard in the land of the amended dag number, it was found that the land belongs to someone named Jamir Ali. Ali was allegedly attacked multiple times by Farooq's men for the possession of the land.
The lawyer for the writ petition said that even after the report was published in the media, the concerned agencies did not take any action.
Farooq was held by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) with his accomplice Firoze al-Mamun on April 14. However, RAB sources said that Farooq was held over an attempted murder case.
