The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs has pointed out that no one has been appointed as acting chief justice as yet.
The ministry’s public relations officer Rezaul Karim issued the clarification in a short message on Saturday, adding, “Dear journalist friends, no notification has been issued for the appointment of acting chief justice so far.
“Therefore, the law ministry is requesting to refrain from covering misleading news in this regard.”
A number of media organisations had earlier published articles that Appellate Division Judge Ashfaqul Islam has been appointed the acting chief justice.
After that, Hasnat Abdullah, one of the coordinators of Boishommo Birodhi Chhatra Andolon, issued an ultimatum in a Facebook post, demanding the cancellation of Ashfaqul Islam’s appointment.
In his post, Hasnat Abdullah wrote, “Newly appointed Acting Justice Ashfaqul Islam is a friend of fascism, and is rejected by the students and citizens. Syed Rifat Hossain should be appointed chief justice by 6pm without delay.
“All the students and citizens in Dhaka are being called to march in front of the High Court on the Shikkha Chattar.”
It should be noted that Obaidul Hasan resigned from his position as chief justice on Saturday. Besides, five judges of the Appellate Division have also decided to resign the same day.
