A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced Md Iqbal Hossain to one year and four months of jail for igniting communal violence in Cumilla by placing a copy of the Holy Quran inside a puja mandap in 2021.

Judge AM Julfikar Hayat of Dhaka Cyber Tribunal passed the judgment in presence of two convicts in the case. Five witnesses, including the investigation officer, testified in the case.

As Iqbal had no counsel to defend his case, the court asked him whether he would like to cross-examine any of the witnesses himself. In reply, Iqbal said he already confessed his crimes and is remorseful for what he has done.

The court sentenced him to one year and four months of jail term. The court also convicted another Rokon Miah and said the time he was kept behind the bars since his arrest, would be considered his jail term.

Md Iqbal Hossen placed a copy of the Holy Quran inside Nanua Dighirpar puja mandap on October 13, 2021, igniting communal violence in several districts including Cumilla.
