SC summons Dinajpur mayor over derogatory remarks

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday summoned the mayor of Dinajpur municipality mayor Syed Jahangir Alam and asked him to appear before the court on August 24 in person for making derogatory remarks against a judge of the Appellate Division.

A six-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique asked the mayor to explain his role after appearing before the court on August 24 at 9am.

The court also asked the Bangladesh Telecommunication and Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to remove the video containing the remarks of the mayor Jahangir, from the internet.

Four layers of the Supreme Court filed a contempt of court petition for making derogatory comments against Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division M Enayetur Rahim centering the verdict against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on YouTube. The four lawyers are — Advocates Harun-or-Rashid, Mahfuzur Rahman Roman, Md Moniruzzaman Rana and Shafique Raihan Shaon.

Advocate Shah Manzurul Haque stood for the petitioner while Attorney General AM Amin Uddin represented the state.

The SC also issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why Mayor Jahangir should not be punished in the contempt of court rule and why directives should not be given to issue show cause notice against him.

Jahangir Alam was elected as the mayor of Dinajpur municipality in 2011.
