Two JMB men jailed for 17yrs

A court in Khulna on Tuesday sentenced two members of the banned militant outfit Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to 17 years and six months imprisonment in an Explosive Act case filed in 2020.

Judge of Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal Rozina Akhter announced the verdict in a crowded courtroom in the presence of the convicts after examining 22 witnesses, Public Prosecutor Md Showkat Ali Suza confirmed to BSS.

Court sources said the police arrested two youths near the city’s Gallamary area with a large number of bomb-making materials on January 25, 2020.

Momtazul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sonadanga police station, filed a case the next day against them.

The convicted youths are Momtazul Islam Rafi, 26, son of Md Rezaul Karim, a resident of Shibganj upazila in Bogura, and Nur Mohammad Anik, 27, son of Abdur Rahman of Ghior upazila in Manikganj.

They primarily confessed to their involvement in making improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and bomb attacks at a police car garage in the city’s Arongghata area on December 5 in 2019.

On August 22 in 2020, the then DB inspector of KMP Enamul Haque submitted a charge sheet to the Khulna Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court, accusing the two JMB men.
