Covid-19: Another 18 die, infection rate drops below 3pc

Bangladesh reported 18 new coronavirus-related deaths and 617 infections in a 24-hour period till 8:00am on Sunday.

Continuing a downward trend, the positivity rate dropped further down to 2.90 per cent from Saturday’s 3.41 per cent.

The positivity rate fell below 3 per cent after more than seven months, since February 28 when the rate was 2.87 per cent.

The overall caseload now stands at 15,57,964 and the total fatalities at 27,573 according to the press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Health authorities reported the latest figures after testing 21,246 samples at 821 laboratories across the country. Bangladesh has so far tested 97,10,699 samples.

Meanwhile, 1,112 patients recovered from the deadly infection in the last 24-hours, raising the overall recovery to 15,18,758.

Among the fresh fatalities, nine were males and the rest were females.

Dhaka and Chattogram divisions logged the highest deaths with seven fatalities; followed by two each in Rajshshi and Khulna.

Barishal, Mymensingh, Rangpur and Sylhet divisions reported no new deaths.

Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8 last year and the first coronavirus-related death on March 18 the same year.

Meanwhile, the global Covid-19 caseload reached 235,486,198 and the death toll to 4,813,148 till Sunday morning, according to US-based Johns Hopkins University (JHU) update.
