Covid-19 infections top 200,000-mark in Bangladesh

Total number of infections in Bangladesh crossed the 200,000-mark with 2,709 more people being tested positive in the last 24 hours as of Saturday, making 202,066 confirmed cases in total. 

Besides, 34 patients died from Covid-19, taking the death toll to 2,581.

Additional Director General (Admin) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr Nasima Sultana revealed the information at a regular online briefing on Saturday afternoon.

Dr Nasima mentioned that a total of 10,632 samples were collected and 10,923 tested in the last 24 hours. So far, a total of 1,017,674 samples have been tested in the country. 

With 1,373 new recoveries, a total of 110,098 patients recovered from coronavirus to date.

The deceased, of whom 29 were males and five females, belonged to the following age groups: one was between 21-30 years, one between 31-40, one between 41-50 years, 15 between 51-60 years, five between 61-70, 10 between 71-80 and one was between 81-90 years.

Under division-wise categorisation, 14 hailed from the Dhaka division, six from Khulna, five from Rajshahi, four from Sylhet, three from Chattogram and one each from Barishal and Mymensingh divisions.

32 breathed their last while undergoing treatment at various hospitals whereas two died at home.

Meanwhile, the global death toll from the novel coronavirus infection reached 601,820 as of Saturday morning, according to the Centre for System Science and Engineering of Johns Hopkins University.

So far, 14,049,207 cases have been confirmed around the world after Covid-19, the disease caused by the new strain of coronavirus, was first reported in China in December last year.

As yet, 7,861,823 people have recovered.
