Mortality rate from the novel coronavirus infection increased by about 9 per cent in Dhaka division in September. However, government accounts show fresh cases of Covid-19 decreased significantly during this period.
Experts said as Dhaka division is a more populous region than the other parts of the country, it is understandable that mortality rate will be higher here than the other regions.
Statistics show that in August, 1,160 people died from Covid-19 in the country. Of the deceased, 581 were from Dhaka, which was 50.8 per cent of the total death rate.
On the other hand, in September, 970 people died from Covid-19 across the county and 572 of them were from Dhaka division, which was 58.88 per cent.
Life in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country is now back to business after nearly five months of the economic shutdown and social restrictions as the government lifted the lockdown, although urged people to comply with health protocol, such as wearing masks and maintaining social distance.
However, people in Dhaka seems hardly maintain social distancing and many of them aren't even wearing masks while going out of the home.
Health experts said people do not fear coronavirus anymore and life has gone back to how it was in the post-pandemic period.
Professor of health economics at Dhaka University Dr Syed Abdul Hamid told The Business Post, “People lack awareness for maintaining health protocol and some are shy or feel awkward wearing masks. We should consider getting vaccines quickly rather than thinking about maintaining social distancing and wearing masks.”
Death toll from Covid-19 jumped to 5,272 with 21 deaths in the last 24 hours and infections so far reached to 364,987.
The official figure shows the recovery rate in the country now stands at 75.91 per cent while the mortality rate is at 1.44%.
John's Hopkins university data shows over 33.98 million people have been infected from novel coronavirus so far and 1.01 million people have died.
