Covid daily deaths drop below 20 to 17 after four months

Bangladesh reported 17 new coronavirus-related deaths and 1,178 infections in a 24-hour period till 8:00am on Wednesday.

During this period, the positivity rate went down to 4.12 per cent from Monday's 4.49 per cent.

The overall caseload now stands at 15,55,051 and the total fatalities at 27,487, according to the press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Health authorities reported the latest figures after testing 28,599 samples at 821 laboratories across the country. Bangladesh has so far tested 97,04,722 samples.

The daily death count dropped below 20 after 126 days. Earlier, health authorities logged 17 deaths on May 26.

Meanwhile, 1,086 patients recovered from the deadly infection in the last 24-hours, raising the overall recovery to 15,14,962.

Among the fresh fatalities, 10 were males and seven were females.

Dhaka division logged the highest deaths with 12 fatalities, followed by three in Chattogram and one each in Rajshahi and Khulna.

Rangpur, Mymensingh, Barishal and Sylhet divisions reported no new deaths.

Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8 last year and the first coronavirus-related death on March 18 the same year.

Meanwhile, the global Covid-19 caseload reached 232,723,959 and the death toll to 4,764,232 till Wednesday morning, according to US-based Johns Hopkins University (JHU) update.
