Covid: New N501Y mutation found in Bangladesh in January

Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) says a highly contagious variant of Covid-19 has been detected in Bangladesh.

The mutant, ‘N501Y’, was first identified here in 5/6 UK returnees in January this year, IEDCR Director Prof Tahmina Shirin said Tuesday.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the new UK variant of coronavirus has been confirmed in Dhaka and Sylhet.

The N501Y variant has so far been detected in 83 countries of the world, which is even more contagious, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
