Fourteen more Covid-19 patients died in the past 24 hours at the Corona dedicated Satkhira Medical College and Hospital till Thursday morning, the highest single-day death toll in a day, according to the district's health officials.

Of the deceased, eight reportedly died due to an oxygen supply disruption at the hospital, four were Covid-19 positive and the other two died with Covid-like-symptoms.

The victims died not because of the oxygen crisis, but of the negligence of the authorities to meet it, patients’ relatives complained.

Dismissing the allegation, Dr Hussein Shafayet, Civil Surgeon of Satkhira district, said the central oxygen pressure had certainly dropped but no one had died in the oxygen crisis. Central oxygen supply became normal around 8:00pm.

The Covid positive patients who died during that period were already in a critical state, he claimed.

Satkhira Medical has 76 large oxygen cylinders. When there is a crisis, it automatically provides oxygen, he added.

A total of 275 patients are currently undergoing medical treatment till Thursday morning at the hospital.

Meanwhile, in the last 24 hours, 95 samples were tested, of which 52 came out Covid positive.

As per the test ratio of the samples, the infection rate was 50 per cent.

Earlier on Wednesday, seven more people died in the district, two of them were corona positive while others died of Covid symptoms.
