Four brothers have been killed on Tuesday when a pickup van ploughed into them in Chakaria upazila of Cox’s Bazar.

The accident took place on Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway near Malumghat of Dulahazara area of the upazila in the early hours of Tuesday. 

Confirming the incident, Malumghat Highway police station in-charge Inspector Shafayet Hossain said they are trying to find the pickup van and its driver.

The accident also left five of the same family injured. They were from Sagir Shah Kata village area of Malumghat.

The deceased were identified as Anupam Shil, 47, Nirupam Shil, 35, Deepak Shil, 40, and Champak Shil, 30.

From the same family, Swaran Sushil, 24, Plabon Shil, 22, and their sisters Hira Shil, 27, and Munni, 30, were also injured. Raktim Sharma, 33, was also injured in the incident.

The injured were admitted to Christian Memorial Hospital at Malumghat, Inspector Shafayet Hossain confirmed, adding that Swaran was taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.

The father of the siblings died 10 days ago. On Tuesday the family completed a religious ritual and were waiting on the side of the road when the Cox's Bazar-bound pickup van suddenly ran them over. Four of the brothers died on the spot, while the others were injured, the inspector said.

Locals rushed them to the hospital, where duty doctors declared four brothers dead. Bodies were handed over to the family, Shafayet added.
