Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) adviser Haider Akbar Khan Rono has passed away. He breathed his last in the city’s Health and Hope Hospital at 2:05am, confirmed CPB General Secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince.

Politician and writer Rono was admitted to Panthapath Health and Hope Hospital with acute respiratory complications on the evening of May 6, said the hospital's director and public health expert Dr Lelin Chowdhury.

The doctor also mentioned in a Facebook post that Rono was being kept in the hospital’s High Dependency Unit (HDU) and receiving oxygen in a special way, due to his deteriorating condition.

Rono is a legend of communist movement in Bangladesh, one of the organisers of the 1971 Liberation War, and the author of several books. This Marxist theorist was the general secretary of the East Pakistan Students Union.

Rono was born on August 31, 1942 in Kolkata. His ancestral home is the Barashula village of Narail.

After years of involvement with the Workers Party of Bangladesh, Rono left the organisation in 2010 due to disagreements. He later joined the CPB. In 2012, he was made a presidium member of the party, and then elected as the adviser of CPB.
