The Detective Branch (DB) of police has arrested three people, including a man impersonating the Cumilla superintendent of police, from Dhaka and Madaripur districts for reportedly defrauding people in the name of getting them constable jobs.

Cumilla Superintendent of Police (SP) Abdul Mannan made the disclosure at a press brief on Thursday, adding that the DB has confiscated mobile phones, SIM cards, and cash from the suspects during the drive.

The arrestees are fraud gang ringleader Merajul Islam aka Lion Meraj – who was posing as the prime minister's press secretary, Zaman Khadaker Alimuzzaman – who was posing as the Cumilla SP, and Ripon Fakir.

SP Abdul Mannan said, “This racket swindled Tk 6 lakh from a woman named Moriam Begum by promising to get her grandson a constable job in the Bangladesh Police.

“During phone conversations with Moriam, Merajul posed as the prime minister's press secretary, and Md Alimuzzaman as Cumilla SP. Ripon was working as their cohort in the scam. The trio lives in different areas of Madaripur. A case has been filed in this regard.”

On a tip-off, the police managed to arrest the perpetrators, and recover Tk 2 lakh of the money this gang had swindled, he added.

The Cumilla SP pointed out that recently 206 people from Cumilla got hired by the Bangladesh Police, and they spent only Tk 106. The Cumilla police has ensured cent per cent transparency in the recruitment process.

Additional Superintendent of Police Khandakar Ashfakuzzaman and district DB acting official Rajesh Barua were present at the press brief among others.
