3 smugglers arrested with gold worth over Tk11cr

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested three gold smugglers with 61 gold bars weighing over 13 kilogram from the Kaiba border area of Jashore's Sharsha upazila on Tuesday.

Lieutenant Colonel Tanvir Rahman, the commander of the 21-BGB battalion, said the market value of the seized gold is Tk 11.20 crore.

Tanvir said a BGB patrol team conducted a raid at the Gazir-Kaiba bridge upon receiving information that a large quantity of gold bars were being smuggled to India through the Kaiba border.

During the raid, three smugglers were arrested while racing towards the border on a motorcycle.

Later, the BGB seized the motorcycle and took it to the camp, where they found 61 gold bars weighing 13.14kg and worth Tk 11.20 crore.

The arrestees were identified as Jahidur Rahman (45), son of Alek Mollah of Baradia village under Narail's Lohagora police station, Hrittik Kazi, son of Insan Kazi of the same area; and Bellal Hossain, 23, son of Yunus Ali of Putkhali village under the jurisdiction of the Benapole Port Police Station in Jashore.

They were handed over to the Sharsha police station. Meanwhile, the seized gold bars were deposited at the treasury branch of Jashore Customs.
