Police in an overnight drive arrested four Awami League (AL) leaders from the city's Pallabi area on charges of killing Sheikh Md Sakib Raihan by indiscriminate firing at the protesters during the anti-discrimination student movement at Mirpur on July 19.
The arrestees are – ward no two unit vice-president Prof Md Delwar Hossain, E block unit president Ismail Hossain Jabed, D block unit president Md Iftekharul Chowdhury Chamon and C block unit general secretary Md Lal Mia Mallik under Pallabi Thana AL unit.
Being tipped off, the police arrested the four AL leaders from Muslim Bazar area of Pallabi on Monday night in Raihan murder case filed with Pallabi Police Station on October 3.
The arrestees were found involved in the firing incident and killing as well after scrutinizing the video footage, a police press release read.
The case details said that a group of Awami League and its front and associate bodies leaders and activists opened indiscriminate fire and hurled cocktails at the student-people movement in front of Popular Diagnostic Centre at Mirpur-6 on July 19 afternoon.
Raihan suffered critical bullet wounds and was rushed to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital where the on-duty physicians announced him dead. The arrestees will be sent to the court.
