The Anti Terrorism Unit (ATU) of police has arrested eight people from Rajshahi for their alleged involvement with illegal online gambling and embezzlement.
The arrestees are - Rakibul Hasan Milan, 39; Sirajudaula alias Babu, 40; Md Sumon, 44; Md Dollar, 40; Md Ashraful, 38; Shahidul Islam, 45; Md Suman, 42; and Jyoti Kumar Dev, 24. The ATU arrested them from the city’s Boalia area on Tuesday, read a press release.
On a tip off, an ATU team conducted drives in different areas under the Boalia police station, and arrested the suspects. Nine mobile phones used for online gambling operations and Tk 10,800 in cash were seized from them as well.
The arrested persons used to run an organised gang utilising online gambling sites and apps such as bet365, betbuzz365, dreamz444.com, SKYFAIR247, and MASTI247 to lure people in with promises of earning cash through online casinos and gambling.
The gang also illegally carried out e-transactions and cash transactions using mobile phones to siphon huge amounts of money, read the press release, adding that the arrestees facilitated online gambling and transacted several crores of Taka through e-transactions.
Legal action has been taken against them.
