The Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) has arrested a man named Md Abdur Rahman, 36, from Patuakhali for his alleged involvement with the banned militant outfit Ansar-al Islam.

A motorcycle parts dealer by profession, Abdur was arrested on Saturday from the municipal area under Kalapara police station. During the arrest, the ATU seized four mobile phones, six SIM cards, three SD cards, two extremist books and 78 pages of digital evidence from him.

Superintendent of Police of ATU (Media and Awareness Wing) Mohammad Aslam Khan confirmed the matter in a press release on Sunday, mentioning that Abdur is an active member of Ansar-al Islam.

Khan further said, “For the past 5-6 years, he has been promoting extremism, terrorism and the doctrine of organisation’s leader Jasim Uddin Rahmani, through the use of multiple IDs on Facebook.

“The arrestee used his various Facebook IDs to post encouraging attacks and killings of law enforcement agencies.”

The officer added, “Abdur was carrying out different campaigns with the aim of triggering conspiracies, murders, terror and panic against the state by propagating misinterpretation of Quran and Hadith.

“He was working to establish a so-called caliphate regime by abolishing the country's democratic governance system and constitution through armed jihad.”
