The customs have seized a large consignment of foreign liquors from Chattogram port as the goods were imported using false declaration papers and tax evasion.

"The consignment was brought to Bangladesh on Sunday from China through a fake permission of yarn import using the name of Dong Jin Industrial of Nilphamari's Uttara Export Processing Zone," said Saiful Haque, deputy commissioner of the Chattogram Customs House.

"The seized goods are being counted. The importers evaded duty of Tk24.70 crore."

Earlier, the customs seized two large consignments of foreign liquors from Sonargaon and Narayanganj in the early hours of Saturday. The goods were also imported through the Chattogram port under false declaration paper and tax evasion.

The Chattogram Customs House seized the containers loaded with a huge stash of foreign liquors during a special drive. The seized goods were later brought back to the port city.

The consignments were released from the port using the declaration of textured yarn and machinery imports from China using fake import permission using the names of Cumilla EPZ's Hashy Tiger and Ishwardi EPZ's BHK Textile, Saiful said.

"As the shipments contained foreign liquor with high taxable value, importers evaded a big amount of tax," he added.
