A Dhaka court on Monday sentenced eight people to death in a case filed over killing Mehedi Hasan Jasim, leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of the district, in 2013.
Lakshmipur Additional District and Sessions Judges Court Judge Amina Farhin pronounced the verdict Monday afternoon.
The convicts sentenced to death are — Abul Hossain, 68, Ali Hossain Bachchu, 43, Mostafa, 43, Khokon, 48 Mubarak Ulla, 61, Kabir Hossain Ripon, 26, Zafar Ahmad, 61, and Hizbur Rahman Swapon, 40.
Seven of the accused were present at the court while Hizbur Rahman Swapon absconded.
Victim Mehedi Hasan Jasim was the Literature Affairs Secretary of Kofil Uddin Degree College Chhatra League and son of Mofiz Ulla, a resident of Shrirampur village in Dattapara union of Sadar upazila.
According to the details of the case, Mofiz Ulla of Srirampur village shared a longstanding feud with Mubarak Ulla and Ali Hossain Bachchu over a piece of land.
As a sequel to the enmity, Mubarak and his supporters beat Mofiz Ullah and his family members on January 7, 2013.
Later, a case was filed at the police station in this connection.
On February 10, Jasim went to his relative's house in Radhapur village and stayed there. The accused entered the house by breaking the window grill at night and shot Jasim and fled the scene, leaving him seriously injured.
Jasim was rushed to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead. The next day, a murder case was filed by Jasim's father, Mofiz Ullah at Sadar police.
Later, police submitted a charge sheet against the 12 suspects in this case. Four of the accused have died.
After examining the record and witnesses, the court found them guilty. Public prosecutor (PP) Advocate Jasim Uddin confirmed the matter.
