Police have arrested four people in connection with the incident of stealing Tk 29 lakh breaking the vault at IFIC Bank's sub-branch in Bogura.
Tk 10 lakh in cash and a motorcycle have also been recovered from their possession following their arrest.
Bogura police super Sudeep Kumar Chakravarty stated it at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, according to media sources.
Arrested people are Zahidul Islam, 30, of village Hukmapur under Bogura Sadar upazila; Bimol Rajbhar, 30, of village Singria under Fulchhari police station in Gaibandha district; Biplob Sarker Mithun alias Mithu, 28 of village Talshon under Adamdighi police station; and Pavel of village Dakkhin Atkaria in Sonatala police station.
The police super said four were arrested on Monday night after conducting drives in Bogura and Dhaka over the last five days. Then as per their confessions, cash Tk 10,85,940 and a motorcycle bought spending the stolen money were recovered from Zahidul's house.
The theft took place at a sub-branch of IFIC Bank at Matidhali area in Bogura city after midnight on JUne 12 last. The thieves entered the bank breaking the locks of the gate of the bank and then fled away stealing Tk 29,40,618 from the vault.
The police super said a case was filed with Bogura Sadar Police Station at night on June 13. Then the detective branch and police from the Sadar Police Station identified the culprits examining the CCTV footage taken from the surrounding areas.
Then on June 19, police lauynched a drive to arrest the criminals.
The police super further said following the arrest of mastermind of bank theft Zahidul Islam from Dakkhin Khan in Dhaka, three others were arrested following his confessional statement. After the arrest, they told police that they had planned to commit robbery in the sub-branch one month ago Then Zahidul went to the bank several times and observed the situation.
